We had the pleasure of photographing Jonathan Bales, one of the founders of FantasyLabs and RotoAcademy, for Success Magazine. Bales is a daily fantasy sports player and a pioneer in fantasy sports. He’s not one of the tens of millions of mostly men who do this but part of a very small elitist group who actually makes a good living from the game – the 1.3 percent who reportedly take home 91 percent of the winnings. He’s self-published several well-received books on daily fantasy sports and also created a few websites to help players win in fantasy. Ultimately, Bales argues that fantasy sports is a skill based game; the best players continuously win over time, and how you utilize the plethora of data to influence your strategy is key. Although he enjoys watching sports, he is ultimately dispassionate and disciplined – a religious researcher who knows numbers rule. His approach stems from his love of statistical analysis and his philosophical connection to the game. His unique approach garnered the attention of Shark Tank’s Mark Cuban who was an early investor in FantasyLabs.
What I found particularly interesting about Jonathan was his belief that you could overlay his strategy of statistical analysis, predictive modeling and removing emotional bias onto larger challenges outside the world of sports.
With the help of Susie Fischer as our stylist, we were able to whimsically illustrate Jonathan’s business life!
